When thinking of great and innovative ways to teach your children about important life lessons and to instill in them values that you would like them to carry on as they age, it is sometimes hard to accomplish what was originally in the plan. However, if you are a big supporter of protecting our environment, there are a few methods that can teach kids the importance of giving back to our planet.

Children usually have tons of toys when they grow up and many of them end up not even being played with after a certain amount of time. What many parents do not realize is that these used toys can be recycled and made into other renewable resources. Why not show your children the importance of recycling and taking care of the environment by taking them on a trip to recycle their used toys?

You can call your local dump or recycling service and check which toys would be able to be re-used. Once you and your child have sorted through the toys and picked out which ones will be taken to be recycled, explain to your child about recycling, why it is important, and how this action is helping the planet. All in all, this is a great way to teach your child an important and valuable lesson.

The desire for businesses, homes, and people to be green or more environmentally friendly is a trend that has become incredibly popular in the last few years. The question is if this trend will continue, or if it is merely a fad. People are becoming increasingly aware of the effect that there actions have on the environment and the effect that the environment has on them. As long as people continue to be educated about these matters it is likely that this is much more that an passing fad.
Looking at the environmental movement over the last few decades, it is easy to see that this has been a steadily growing trend since the 1970′s and can be traced back as far as the 1940′s with victory gardens and wartime recycling drives. The popularity of the latest green movement, is linked to the recognition of the effect that these actions have long term rewards. Despite the current economic crisis many businesses and individuals are spending more money now on items that are more environmentally friendly and will save them money in the long run. While it can be argued that this is more about saving money that the environment, it is clear that at at time when most people and businesses would be cutting corners they are willing to spend more now to save more later.

Keeping a clean and healthy environment can be fairly simple and very cost effective. For starters, having good windows and doors that keep heat and air conditioning inside and prevent leakage is a wise step. It’s inescapable that weather variations in each region and extremes in temperatures make good, efficient HVAC essential to a reasonable home-life. But heating and cooling the front yard at your expense is unreasonable. Energy efficient appliances are readily available at all big box stores and will save money and electrical power. These appliances perform well and the ROI is immediate.

Having a water filtration system reduces waste from running water too often and keeping bottled water off the shopping list. Again the ROI is immediate and tastes good too. Coffee and other brewed drinks taste richer with filtered water, you and your family will drink more water and stay healthier and slimmer too.

Healthy environmental habits are usually simple and very cost effective. Learning about them is quick and easy and sharing them is rewarding and fun. Everyone benefits from good environmental practices and they are very affordable. The smallest and most affordable changes can make the most effective differences. Preventing heating and cooling loss, water filtration and energy efficient appliances are good places to begin.

You already know plenty of ways to save money: install a tankless water heater, get Directv deals, buy local produce but have you ever wanted to MAKE money by being green? Here are a few of the steps you should take if you-re considering a career in the green industry
Talk to a Community Leader: odds are there-s someone in your area already doing something about the green initiatives in your town. Ask for a meeting with them to find out what-s on the docket already and find out how you can help.
Volunteer: If you already know a green company you-d like to work for, start volunteering! There-s no better way to show them you mean business than by donating your time and if it doesn-t turn into a job at least you-ve done something good for your community.
Start Something Small: Think outside the box and start your own green company. Whether it-s an organic farm or something in engineering there are plenty of ways to get off the ground without a lot of capital.

Only recently have the American public become aware enough of their wasteful habits to act on them. The average amount of garbage that a person living in America today produces is about 4.4 pounds. As startling as that is between eighty and ninety percent of that garbage is considered recyclable. If you compound the daily garbage output over a years time it adds up to around 1600 pounds of garbage per person per year. This kind of habitually wasteful behavior is just unacceptable. As a society we must make a conscious effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

There are many advertising campaigns in the present day attempting to break us from our old habits of disposing of that which we can not use ourselves. If we only took the time to recycle that 80 percent of garbage that we throw away each day we would only produce about .88 pounds of garbage per day. This would make our yearly output about 321 pounds, a mere fraction of what it is today. Along with the recycling portion of our routine, the point of reusing old materials would reduce that statistic even further. Take your old clothes to a shelter. Save our planet.

Every year, Americans throw away tons of trash, and some of that trash are actually items that can be reused or recycled. In today’s America, most material items are thought of as being disposable, and this is an alarming trend that needs to be stopped so to avoid damage to our precious environment. Just because something is garbage to you, it doesn’t mean that is has no use to someone else.

Today, there seems to be an obsession with electronics and gadgets, and every day it seems as if there is a new discovery on the technology front that makes people want to toss out the old and bring in the new. For this reason, cell phones, tvs, computers and video game systems are often thought of as disposable items, and this is sad. Not only is it a waste of money to constantly buy new upgraded electronics and gadgets, but it is also a drain on landfills when these items get tossed in the trash. If you need to buy the latest phone, or tv, but your old one is still working fine, consider giving your old product to a place that will recycle it before buying the new product. Many stores that sell electronics also recycle your old ones, so it is very easy for you to eliminate waste.

It is said that America is a throw away society, and this fact is really not something to be proud of. People need to wake up and start appreciating what they already have, especially if what they already have is working fine. If you are one of the people who just can’t stop buying new items, at least have the sense to try and recycle your old item in some way before you make your new item purchase.

The question of if plastic bags should be outlawed or not is one of much debate. From a green living perspective, the answer is easy, yes. But companies are reluctant to stop providing this service to their customers for fear of losing business. As always, there are two sides to every case.

Millions of plastic bags are delivered to landfills each day. Once there, they sit for years and years. Since they are not bio-degradable, they will not even begin to break down unless exposed to the sun, at which time they start to photo-degrade. The length of time is takes for a plastic bag to totally break down is not known.

Outlawing plastic bags would be cause for much anger at first, as many people simply care more about convenience than the health of the environment. But as with any change, after some time, people would come to accept re-usable bags, much in the same way they accepted the change from paper to plastic.

The debate over plastic bags will likely continue well into the future. Unless companies see more individuals bringing in their own recyclable bags, they likely will not discontinue using plastic bags. Hopefully, more people will realize the benefits of using cloth bags, and will force this change to happen sooner than later.
